Abstrak : Background: Smoking has become a part of the human lifestyle and consumed by the various elements of society. Cigarettes contain various substances that are harmful to health, one of them is free radicals. Free radicals can damage the body. Free radicals can be neutralized by substances called antioxidants. Antioxidants can be produced by the human body and also of plants in nature. However, due to high exposure to free radicals today, antioxidant produced by the body is not enough to neutralize the free radicals. Therefore, it needs an additional antioxidant One of the plant that known has antioxidants is red betel vine leaves (Piper crocatum). Objective: To determine the ability of ethanol extract of red betel vine leaves as an antioxidant to prevent the negative effects of smoke on the lungs of Balb/c mice. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study. Population and sample in this study is a mice strain with Balb/c strain which the criteria has been determined that consisted of 75 mice female gender. Mice were divided into 5 groups. After the treatment, 5 mice from each group was terminated for taking their lungs on day 10, 20 and 30. The lungs were made into preparations and were scored according to the degree of damage. Data analysis was performed using the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis Hypothesis test continued with analysis using U Mann-Whitney Hypothesis test. Results: There were significant differences in histological lung condition of Balb/c mice between groups were exposed to smoke and were given ethanol extract of red betel leaves with the control treatment, demonstrated by the non-parametric hypothesis test with p [0.05 Conclusion: The ethanol extract of red betel vine leaves efficacious as an antioxidant that can reduce lung damage on mice exposed to smoke caused by free radical.
