Abstrak | : | Preparation of sulfated zirconium dioxide (S-ZrO2) and it?s application for citronellal conversion have been carried out. Zirconium dioxide wasprepared from zirconium oxychloride (ZrOCl2.8H2O) then sulfated by adding ammonium sulfate with 1:6 molar ratio followed by calcination at 800oC. The powder was analyzed by using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Surface Area Analyzer (SAA), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Solid Acidity Test. XRD analysis showed higher intensity of tetragonal phase at2. = 30?, 50?, 60?,63?and monoklin phase at 2. = 24?, 28?, 31?, 42?, 46?.SAA analysis showed higher surface area and pore volume than ZrO2 but not significant. Acidity test of S-ZrO2 showed higher result than ZrO2. The characterized S-ZrO2 was used as catalyst in microwave assisted-one step conversion of citronellal for 15 minutes. The result showed that S-ZrO2 catalyst for citronellal reaction give conversion value 100% and it producedisopulegol and menthol. The selectivity in producing menthol was 3.003%. The result was higher compared with ZrO2 catalyst. The selectivity of menthol was 1.384%. The results indicated that both cyclization and hydrogenation were occured in one-step mechanismover S-ZrO2.
