Abstrak : Catalytic activity of sulfated ZrO2-montmorillonite in the cyclization-hydrogenation of citronellal has been studied. At the beginning of the process, preparation of ZrO2-montmorillonite was carried out by mixing a solution of Zr polioksokation with montmorillonite suspension stirred for 24 h and calcined at a temperature of 600oC for 4 h. Preparation of sulfated ZrO2-montmorillonite was made by mixing ZrO2-montmorillonite previously obtained in (NH4)2SO4 at a rasio Zr:SO...is 1:6 and calcined at a temperature of 800oC. The prepared materials were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), measurement of the specific surface area, total pore volume and pore size distribution by the N2 adsorption method and surface acidity determination by using n-butylamine titration method. Activity test are divided into two methods. Method 1: using ZrO2-montmorillonite catalyst, while method 2: using sulfated ZrO2-montmorillonite catalyst. Each catalyst was mixed with 2 mL of citronellal standard and heated at a temperature of 80?C for 4 hours under a flow of H2 gas with a pressure of 2 kPa to obtain reaction products. The resulting products were analyzed by GC-MS to determine the activity of the catalyst. The results showed that the sulfated ZrO2-montmorillonite catalyst has an activity which is higher than the ZrO2-montmorillonite catalyst in the cyclization-hydrogenation tandem reaction of citronellal when viewed from the selectivity toward isopulegol and menthol. The percentage of the average selectivity toward isopulegol is 79.21%, while the selectivity to menthol is 0.51%. Keywords: sulfated ZrO2-montmorillonite, activity, selectivity, menthol
