| Abstrak | : | Antioxidants are compounds that can inhibit the rate of oxidation or neutralize free radicals. Antioxidants can be derived from synthetic materials or from nature. Abelmoschus manihot, L. Medik, known as gedi, is a plant from eastern part of Indonesia whose leaves has been used for vegetable. Previous studies indicated that the flowers of A. manihot has antioxidant activity due to the flavonoid content. Therefore, gedi leaves are also expected to have an antioxidant activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidants activity of the extracts and fractions of A. manihot. The extract was obtained by maceration with gradien solvent using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Fractionation was carried out by vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) method. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhidrazyl) free scavenging method. The results showed that the extract of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol have antioxidants activities with IC50 values of 1693.036 ppm, 1146.429 ppm, and 648.298 ppm, respectively. The ethyl acetate extract was fractionated with gradient solvents followed by evaluation of antioxidant activity of each fractions. The result showed that the sixth fraction was the most active fraction with IC50 values of 11.818 ppm. Furthermore, based on phytochemical screening the n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts contains alkaloid, in methanol extracts contains alkaloid, flavonoid, and saponin, while in the sixth fraction contains alkaloid and terpenoid.
