| Abstrak | : | Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum(L)) are commonly used in traditional medicine. Essential oil of clove has efficacy as an anti-bacterial and analgesic. Clove oil formulated in a gel form for use as topical anti-acne. However, Clove oil are known sensitizer (cause allergic skin reaction), skin irritation and/or chemical burns if applied directly on skin. It is therefore necessary to test the primary irritant of clove oil gel. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of primary irritation such as erythema and edema in the use of clove oil gel with carbopol base. The study was conducted with the primary irritation test method in animal models. Animal models were used male rabbits with experimental time for 24 and 72 hours on incision skin and non-incision skin. There were 6 treatment groups, 4 groups of rank-dose use clove oil gel with carbopol base, 2 for normal control group with aquadest and control base gel. Qualitative analysis of the results of observation toxic symptoms such as erythema and edema, a quantitative test of the primary irritation index calculation. The results showed that clove oil gel with carbopol base at doses of 0.25 g/inchi2 and 0.5g/inchi2 included in the category of virtually no irritation (negligible), while for 1g/inchi2 dose and 2 g/inchi2 included in the category slightly irritation.
