| Abstrak | : | Refining of cooking oil as biodiesel feedstock has been conducted. Purification was carried out using varying concentrations of methanol and volume. This aimed to determine effectivenessof methanol in the process. Parameters tested was the levels of free fatty acids (FFA). The test sample was extracted with various concentration of 30, 50, 70, and 100% and various volume of 10, 25, 50, 100, and 150 mL. As a results, it was stated that concentration and volume of methanol effects on cooking oil refining as pretreatment of biodiesel. Concentration of methanol 100% was able to reduce levels of FFA from 2.32% to 1.54% with a decrease effectiveness 33.37%. using methano 100%, volume of methanol 150mL decreased FFA levels to 0.25% with decrease effectiveness 89.23%. the quality of extracted cooking oil was also supported by the spesific gravity and refractive index before and after purification. With the levels of free fatty acid yielded,the cooking oil can be used as raw material for biodiesel. Key word: cooking oil, methanol, FFA, biodiesel |
