Abstrak : In an effort to reduce development costs, one way is to use local building materials. As an example of this is a coconut shell ash, which can be used as an added ingredient in the manufacture of mortar (Block Paving). The purpose of this study is to close the pores of the mortar due to the reaction between cement and water to form gluten, so the resulting mortar with better characteristics. This study uses an experimental method using the specimen control and research. Control specimens prepared without the addition of coconut shell ash, while the object is created with a variety of research trials the addition of coconut shell ash: 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10% and 12.5% by weight of cement. Tests conducted in this study as follows: block paving characteristics (compressive strength of dry and wet state, flexural strength, water absorption). Testing characteristics of the paving block (compressive strength of dry and wet state, flexural strength, water uptake) performed at the Laboratory of Construction Materials Engineering Department of Civil Engineering (Universitas Islam Indonesia). The process of making paving block is done using hydraulic pressing machine and vibrator. Tests performed at age] 28 days after the process of the test object. From the test results obtained, any addition of coconut shell ash increased the compressive strength of dry and wet conditions and on the flexural strength of paving blocks. On the condition of variation of 10% experiencing optimum conditions, the dry compressive strength of an average of 268.84 kg / cm 2, compressive strength of wet conditions on average 215.24 kg/cm2 and flexural strength by an average of 27.99 kg/cm2. The more the addition of coconut shell ash also resulted in increasing the amount of water absorption on the paving block with the highest value of 15.99% on the addition of coconut shell ash 12.5%.
